Cor cordium

If I tell you my heart is misbehaving

don’t get me wrong.  It’s not about my

heart-shaped heart, pink or red, two-

dimensional and used symbolically

for Valentine’s Day. These days, I mean

the other one, the fist-sized pump centrally

located, four chambers, equipped with valves

to open and close, arteries for ferrying a very

useful fluid all over my body. This organ

started keeping time on Day One. Its

beats per minute vary, but its beats per

lifetime are a number fixed and finite,

yet not known in sum until the final

thump.  What can my heart of hearts

tell me about the day it will be mute?
