No Blood

My father used to take me

down this alleyway

near the five points

in Downtown Barrie

when I was eight or nine

years old

and tell me about all the fights

he got into there

on the way home from

school.

Real bloodbaths

against the brick walls

and dumpsters.

I always looked for dried blood

as he talked.

There wasn’t any.

He said

he told his parents he fell

when he got home

covered in blood

and they believed

him.

Which was good,

because I

didn’t.

There was never any

blood.
